Но очевидно, что нужно бы провести расследование и выяснить, как эта шайка-лейка (the Grey Zone, Tucker Carlson, etc) получала и получает финансирование и, важнее, инструкции. Я не думаю, что из Кремля прямо каждый день приходят конкретные указания по тому, что и как эти мерзкие товарищи должны говорить и писать, но конкретную картину и пути-проводки видеть хотелось бы в деталях.

The Freedom Convoy was the result of some pretty heavy-handed Government policy, to be fair. We can argue about the GoFundMe or even whether the FC was an appropriate reaction in the first place, but let's not forget that Justin Trudeau's government actually did BAN people who had not taken covid vaccines from using commercial planes and trains within Canada and also from leaving the country. Again, people weren't exactly being sent to Auschwitz but it most definitely was an egregious violation of Canadians' constitutional rights. Canada in general went so overboard on covid restrictions that it was only a matter of time before something blew and the Freedom Convoy was it.
Anyone can look up for themselves whether Canada’s vaccine mandates were more restrictive than comparable western countries (a few examples: Italy had the same restrictions on planes and trains; Greece and France required proof of vaccination to enter restaurants, bars, etc., and, incidentally, Air Canada supported the gov’t’s requirement).
More importantly in the trucker context, they were “not prevented from leaving the country” because of Canadian restrictions. This is false. They were prevented from *entering* the US, which required proof of vaccination at the border. The issue was US requirements, not Canadian. Unvaccinated truckers were free to ply their trade within and across Canada during covid, which they continued to do without incident. Roughly 85% of truckers were vaccinated at this time (same percentage the the general population), and the Canadian Trucking Alliance, representing most drivers, made a statement condemning the convoy on Jan. 22, even before they arrived in Ottawa and began the occupation.
And, yes, Neil, it’s correct that the GoFundMe freezing of accounts during the Ottawa and border occupations happened in response to requests from Canadian police, not the federal gov’t. The police presented a case that the money was being raised for criminal activity, not lawful protest, and GoFundMe complied with the request to freeze. GoFundMe was also unable to get satisfactory assurances from the convoy organizers that the funding would not be used for criminal activity, - such as the illegal occupation of Ottawa and border crossings - which is a requirement of their TOS. Also, freezing donations involved many levels of authority - banks, superior courts, provincial gov'ts, not just the feds. GoFundMe also committed to reimbursing most donations, although by court order several million have been withheld pending the outcome of an upcoming civil class action against the convoy organizers by roughly 50,000 Ottawa residents and businesses. (Incidentally, often forgotten in all the noise is that four individuals present at the Coutts, Alberta blockade have been charged with conspiracy to murder RCMP officers. They are currently awaiting trial. They were arrested on Feb. 14, a little over two weeks into the various convoy occupations and blockades, and the Ottawa occupiers were firmly dug in and made it clear that they had no intention to leave. The police operation to clear Ottawa finally occurred on Feb. 20-21).
